April 2020: In the midst of all the information and recommendations surrounding the current Cornovirus (COVID-19) crisis, our Niagara communities have come together to support each other, provide light in uncertain times, and work together to show why we are a top destination! This month we are featuring some of the inspiring stories from our community and showcasing some fantastic local businesses who are doing their part to bring people together while remaining (at least) 6 feet apart.  Niagara Comes Together It's no secret that frontline workers have stepped up as community heroes all across the world. Healthcare teams across Niagara support the most vulnerable communities when they need it most and continue to put patients first, putting their own health at risk, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Health professionals in Canada are playing a critical role in the response to COVID-10 and there is an increasing need for supplies and resources to keep them and the community safe. Here's how you can help support your local healthcare: Make a Donation: Donations will help purchase patient-care equipment and personal protective equipment such as N95 and surgical masks.

Donations may be made online to  Niagara Health Foundation. Visit  www.supportNHF.com  or email Roger Ali at  Roger.Ali@niagarahealth.on.ca  if you are able to contribute.  Help Flatten the Curve:  Follow the guidelines set forth by the Government and World Health Organization and practice social distancing. Stay home if you are experiencing any symptoms, frequently wash your hands, be mindful of your coughing and sneezing etiquette, and avoid gathering in crowds.

Remain Calm & Seek Medical Attention When Necessary It is normal to feel anxious or to feel uncertainty during times of crisis. If we do our part as a community to keep each other safe by following the guidelines set forth by Government of Canada, World Health Organization, and Public Health, the data has shown that we can help reduce the spread of COVID-19.  Niagara Health has two dedicated COVID-19 Asessment Centres (available by referral only) in St. Catharines and Niagara Falls to provide screening, assessment and testing for individuals with symptoms and who have a referral.

If you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19, consult the Ministry of Health's  COVID-19 self-assessment tool and then contact Public Health at (905) 688-8248 x 7019 for an initial screening.   Keep Informed: More information and updates from the Government of Canada can be found by visiting  www.Canada.ca including supports for businesses, individuals, and families.  Good News Niagara The people of Niagara have been showing their support and resilience through a variety of ways. We've gathered a few of our favourite stories to share with you!  Dillon's Small Batch Distillery Geoff Dillon, owner of Dillon's Small Batch Distillers, recognized that the demand for hand sanitizer was quickly growing and jumped into action. The distillery, which typically offers gin, vodka, and other spirits, shifted their production and began making hand sanitizer out of 65% alcohol and aloe.

By providing thousands of bottles to frontline workers including healthcare workers, police officers, paramedics, Meals on Wheels, and local food banks.   Niagara College Canada Niagara College Canada is providing support for local healthcare facilities who are facing a sea of demands for supplies. The Teaching Distillery has been called upon to produce 70% alcohol disinfectant that serves as a multi-purpose sanitizer. The Walker Advanced Manufacturing Innovation Centre research lab is utilizing laser-cutting technology and computer design tools to produce over 2,000 face-shields (through funding provided by the Niagara College-led Southern Ontario Network for Advanced Manufacturing Innovation through Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario).

Equipment from Niagara College's various program areas are also being collected and donated to help support the health community.   Brock University  Brock University has made available a supply of gloves, masks, and chemicals to Niagara Public Health in this time of crisis. The University also has several Level 2 laboratories that may potentially support a scale-up of COVID-19 testing if demand rises – however, they need critical testing materials. The University's Level 3 containment laboratory as well has been approved by the Canadian Government to be used for further COVID-19 research.

Brock Library's Makerspace, which showcases high-tech 3D printers, scanners, and laser-cutters are utilizing the technology to produce face-shields.     Niagara Transit  Niagara Transit has amended their bus route to ensure that riders can easily access services across the city including Project Share, grocery stores, and other various essential services.
