Destination Niagara Falls News - November 2017

A couple looks on in awe as a flaming dish of saganaki arrives at their table, ready to be savoured over a leisurely dinner on an outdoor patio against the backdrop of a gorgeous, early autumn sunset on the Welland Canal.

This scene will play out countless times over the evening as guests fill the dining room at George's Greek Village, an authentic Greek restaurant that has fast become a favourite in Niagara. Any night of the week, the tables here are full, the conversation jubilant and the food delicious. The warm, family-friendly atmosphere, traditional homemade cuisine, and welcoming staff keep hungry customers coming back for more.

Owner George Kountourogiannis and his staff are celebrating their one-year anniversary in St. Catharines. In 2016,  Kountourogiannis opened the authentic Greek restaurant located in what was formerly Frado’s at 535 Queenston Street, near the Homer Bridge that spans the Welland Canal.

“It’s been wonderful. It’s been overwhelming. What the future holds for us, we’re looking forward to surpassing our first year here,” said Kountourogiannis in a video produced by Niagara Buzz, a Destination Niagara Falls partner.

The menu has blossomed in that time, as Kountourogiannis has perfected his chicken from the village and featured a number of dishes on weekends.

With a fully equipped private bar, the banquet hall is a popular place for birthday parties, christenings, anniversaries and celebrations of up to 130 guests, while the patio is a hot spot in the summer - guests have a beautifully peaceful view of boats passing through the canal.

Inside, staff can be found hustling to attend to a room full of guests, keeping them fed and happy. “A big part of George’s success is our amazing staff that we’ve brought in, going from the back of the kitchen to the front line to the servers, bussers, hostesses and of course my right hand man, which is Daniela. She’s front of the house manager for me,” said Kountourogiannis.

“We’ve always strived for good service, great food, we keep our prices in check for the community. We care about what we put on plates,” he said, adding management is responsive to customer feedback and will create dishes based on popular demand.

“The Niagara Region has always been receptive to the Greek community and our family’s been in business in St. Catharines for the last 14 years and with this restaurant here, they’ve really embraced us.”
