Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery
If you’ve never explored your local wineries, why not start this summer with Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery in Jordan?
Located on the Staff family’s 200+ year-old estate on the brow of the Niagara Escarpment in Jordan, the winery has become a local gathering place and community hub. Whether you’re looking to take your sweetie out to dinner and enjoy a delicious three-course meal in the vineyard, escape the day-to-day doldrums to enjoy some market-fresh food on a weekend afternoon, laugh it up at a comedy night or perhaps admire some classic cars and enjoy some live entertainment, there’s sure to be something that captures your interest.
The upcoming Stylin’ Spring Supper on the Ranch on June 8, the Zooma Farm Grill on June 10 and 11, and the Cruise In/Show ‘n Shine Car Show on July 30 are three such events.
While the supper is hosted by the Women of Niagara in the Vineyard to raise funds for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Go Girls! Group mentoring program, proceeds from the car show and the Belly Laughs on the Bench Comedy Night on July 15 will benefit the Howard V. Staff Memorial Fund, administered by the Niagara Community Foundation. The fund was named after Staff’s father.
Racing and cars are close to the hearts of the Staff family. 2017 is the first year for the car show and it’s expected to draw petrol heads from across Southern Ontario and Upper New York State. The event is open to both those with and without show cars. It has the added bonus of helping Staff showcase the property, build her brand, make new buddies and generate some funds for a great cause.
“We hope people come out to spend a day on the farm, enjoy some music, a glass of wine or two, and have a great day looking at cars and chatting with new friends,” said Staff.
“We love the work (the foundation) provides to the community and know that the monies received are put to such worthy uses. And my father was always certain to take part in their events,” said Staff. “Our family has been devoted to giving back where we can.”
“We have the luxury of (owning) one of the most stunning properties in the peninsula, so our way of giving back is to share it with the community. Hosting events for various local charities is as rewarding to us as it is for the cause.”
Staff has become one of Canada’s top winemakers by winning over 450 national and international wine awards, including Ontario Wine Society’s 2002 Winemaker of the Year and one of top four Women in Wine in the world by the International Wine and Spirits Awards of London, England, twice. But Staff’s heart is clearly in Niagara, where she continues to make the winery a place where customers can support a local business and contribute to their community simultaneously.
“I think in today’s marketplace, the consumer is gratified knowing the businesses they support give back. It is part of an overall circle that motivates us all.”
Previous events have benefitted local families in need, Big Brothers Big Sisters, leadership initiatives by the Greater Niagara Chamber of Commerce, and more.
In addition to the events, the winery will launch a host of new wines as the summer progresses. A new grouping of Fancy Farm Girl wines will hit the shelves in the next six weeks. Towards the end of the summer, watch for higher end red and white wines to make their mark, particularly a stunning Pinot Gris and a Viognier blend. Staff predicts that the new 2016 wines are poised to be some of the best yet.
“The 2017 vintage is shaping up to be fabulous as well,” she said, adding the recent wet spring has rehydrated the soils after last year’s drought. “While it has been cool, there is plenty of time for the season to catch up to normal. It was lovely having a long spring for a change.”
